At the heart of that push: the brand-new 233 Suites Unscripted by Hyatt in downtown Mesa, now entering its second week of business.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/arizonamovinginsider.com\/?p=2143\">\u2018Pocket Fire\u2019 sparks near Sedona, evacuation orders in place<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The five-story hotel brings 76 new rooms, creating options for out-of-town guests catching performances at Mesa Arts Center or heading to spring training baseball games.<\/p>\n<p>A Valley Metro platform chimes as visitors arrive, hinting at the growing pulse of downtown Mesa.<\/p>\n<p>For nearby businesses, the hotel\u2019s impact is both promising and immediate. Caterina Ritter, manager of the soon-to-open Crust Simply Italian restaurant next door, says 233 Suites is a game-changer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s not only going to bring business in, but it\u2019s going to help all of the businesses around here,\u201d Ritter said. \u201cSo we\u2019re very excited about it. It\u2019s a huge anchor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Until now, Mesa\u2019s hotel landscape left much to be desired. As of March, city leaders cited just 60 hotels\u2014not counting short-term rentals\u2014and none with luxury status.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a long time coming,\u201d Jeff McVay, the city\u2019s Urban Transformation Director, said.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/arizonamovinginsider.com\/?p=2141\">Two seriously hurt after multi-vehicle crash in Scottsdale<\/a><\/p>\n<p>McVay said 233 Suites is only Mesa\u2019s second large hotel. He notes that for Mesa to thrive as a convention site, at least 400 additional hotel rooms are needed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you\u2019re a tourist, you want to see a city\u2019s downtown. The core is where the cultural assets are,\u201d McVay said. \u201cOn top of that, we have the convention center and amphitheater. These are facilities the city is looking to reposition to bring more activity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite an annual 500,000 event visitors to Mesa, most stay outside city limits, according to Alicia Boe with Visit Mesa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis just brings even more vitality and access for people who can just stay and enjoy the livelihood of events, restaurants and just fun things that are happening downtown,\u201d Boe said. \u201cIt creates even more possibility for that kind of a destination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McVay looks ahead to July 27, when Mesa\u2019s city council decides on plans for another four-star hotel\u2014AC by Marriott, with 156 additional rooms.
