Could Medicaid be next?<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/arizonamovinginsider.com\/?p=2880\">MOST ACCURATE FORECAST: Extreme Heat Warnings in the Valley this week<\/a><\/p><p>H.R. 1, also known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, was signed into law one year ago. The tax law revamped the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Some of the same changes are set to take effect for Medicaid in 2027.<\/p><p>Mike Renaud, the president and CEO of community health provider Valle Del Sol, said SNAP is a precursor to Medicaid.<\/p><p>\u201cWe already know how this story ends,\u201d he said. \u201cJust in the last seven months, Arizona has seen a 50% decline in eligible families for SNAP, including kids.\u201d<\/p><p>Enrollment in SNAP is down by more than 450,000 people since July 2025, according to the latest numbers from the Department of Economic Security.<\/p><div><noscript>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-medium_large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"chart visualization\" class=\"wp-image-2882\" height=\"469\" src=\"https:\/\/arizonamovinginsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/6eeed4ad2643f741ffe33ccb80f324d5-768x469.jpg\" width=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/arizonamovinginsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/6eeed4ad2643f741ffe33ccb80f324d5-768x469.jpg 768w, https:\/\/arizonamovinginsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/6eeed4ad2643f741ffe33ccb80f324d5-300x183.jpg 300w, https:\/\/arizonamovinginsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/6eeed4ad2643f741ffe33ccb80f324d5.jpg 1020w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/noscript><\/div>\n<p>Expanded work requirements and more frequent eligibility checks \u2013 reforms Arizona has already implemented for SNAP \u2013 will come to Medicaid starting Jan. 1, 2027.<\/p><p>And Renaud fears a similar enrollment drop in AHCCCS, Arizona\u2019s Medicaid program.<\/p><p>\u201cIf we lose 400,000 to 600,000 people out of our Medicaid enrollment in this state, it will be an unmitigated disaster,\u201d he said.<\/p><p>U.S. Rep. Greg Stanton said cuts to health care just make the system more expensive for everyone.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Here&#8217;s the thing about taking away someone&#8217;s health care: It doesn&#8217;t take away their need for care,\u201d he said. \u201cIt just changes where they get it and how much it&#8217;s going to cost all of us. Instead of a checkup at a community health center, it&#8217;s a crisis in an emergency room, the most expensive care there is.\u201d<\/p><p>But Republican lawmakers in both Congress and the Legislature say reforms to SNAP and Medicaid are needed to root out fraud, waste, and abuse.<\/p><p>\u201cWe cannot be blind to the fact that these social programs have a tremendous potential for fraudulent abuse,\u201d Senate Majority Leader John Kavanagh told reporters in February.<\/p><p>House Majority Leader Michael Carbone and other GOP lawmakers have also said spending growth in both SNAP and Medicaid is unsustainable.<\/p><p>\u201cWe&#8217;re not a welfare state.
