PHOENIX \u2014 Arizona\u2019s governor needs to be proactive to attract jobs to the state, say the top two Republicans running in the primary for the GOP nomination.<\/p>\n

Affordability tops the list of concerns for many voters, who have been squeezed by high gas prices this year. U.S. Reps. Andy Biggs and David Schweikert both say low taxes and cutting regulations are the keys to growing Arizona\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n

At last month\u2019s Clean Elections Commission debate in Scottsdale, Biggs and Schweikert said the governor needs to attract companies.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will be the biggest cheerleader going out to businesses and telling them, \u2018We do have water. We do have power. We want you in Arizona,\u2019\u201d Biggs said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t sit behind your desk and make pronouncements,\u201d Schweikert told reporters after the debate. \u201cYou go out and earn it.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said the state needs to get back to \u201clove bombing\u201d companies interested in the state, pointing to former Gov. Doug Ducey\u2019s strategy.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe local mayor calls them,\u201d he said. \u201cSomeone from the Commerce Authority calls them.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Biggs and Schwiekert differ on the specifics of tax policy.<\/p>\n

Biggs has proposed eliminating Arizona\u2019s income tax, saying the state needs the change to attract businesses.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you don\u2019t deal with the tax structure that we have in Arizona, guess where they\u2019re going?\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I know this \u2013 they’re going to Texas. They\u2019re going to Tennessee. They\u2019re going to Florida.\u201d<\/p>\n

Schweikert says the proposal doesn\u2019t add up, saying Arizona can\u2019t pay for its state budget without that revenue.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not based in the math and the reality,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

According to the Common Sense Institute, Arizona\u2019s year-over-year job growth is ahead of national average, ranking 10th in the nation.<\/p>\n

But the research group also says the state\u2019s labor market is cooling. Unemployment is also ticking up and, at 4.8%, is at a post-pandemic high, and the number of people employed or looking for work has declined for four straight months.<\/p>\n
