PHOENIX — One person is dead after a shooting involving police officers in north Phoenix on Thursday evening.

Phoenix police confirmed the shooting just before 6 p.m. near Interstate 17 and Pinnacle Peak Road.
The incident started when police located a “wanted felon” driving west on Pinnacle Peak Road. Police said the felon was wanted for a sex offense against a child.
Officers used a grappler device to stop the vehicle. At this point, an officer used his vehicle to pin the driver’s door.

Officials say officers then saw the suspect, while seated in his car, raise a gun and point it at them, leading to the officer-involved shooting. Two officers fired their weapons, striking the suspect.
A handgun was recovered from the suspect, police say.
Firefighters pronounced the man dead at the scene. No officers were injured.
The man has not yet been identified, but police say he was between 50 and 60 years old.
Phoenix police and the Arizona Department of Public Safety are investigating the shooting.
