Woman reported missing Thursday found dead in remote desert area southwest of Maricopa

MARICOPA COUNTY, AZ — A 26-year-old woman was found dead in a remote desert area southwest of Maricopa on Sunday.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office says the woman was found lying under a tree in a wash along I-8 near Vekol Valley.

MCSO says the woman, who was not identified, was reported missing by family members on Thursday afternoon.

They told MCSO that the 26-year-old was traveling on foot from Mexico and crossing through the desert. Her last communication with them was on Wednesday, when she said she was not feeling well and the group she was traveling with had left her behind.

MCSO deputies and search and rescue personnel attempted to locate the woman using coordinates she had sent her family, but she was not located.

On Sunday, she was reportedly located by a group of hikers.

No foul play is suspected at this time.

The investigation into her death is ongoing.
