Officials say it happened near Lindsay and Brown roads around 8 p.m., when police started receiving calls of a shooting in a residential neighborhood.

When officers arrived, they found four people with gunshot wounds.

Two were pronounced dead on the scene. During a preliminary investigation, detectives believe the suspect in this case, 47-year-old Kevin Richardson, took his own life. The victim who was killed has not been identified, nor has the relationship between the two been established.

Police say that during the shooting, Richardson was wearing a tactical-style helmet and vest and fired numerous rounds, including several toward the Mesa Police Department Air Unit.

Later, police located a rifle near Richardson, indicating he took his own life.

During the shooting, Mesa police say two innocent bystanders, an adult and a minor, were struck by gunfire while at a neighboring residence. The two received non-life-threatening injuries.

Residents described hearing multiple rounds fired over several minutes. By Monday morning, a biohazard cleanup crew was working outside the home where the shooting occurred. A pickup truck involved in the incident was also towed from the scene, showing numerous bullet holes.

“It was pretty intense,” said Kitty Kister. “I just heard rounds over and over. The side of our house is all shot up — even the cars in the garage.”

Kister’s father, Jay, and brother, Eli, were among those struck by gunfire but are expected to recover.

According to Emerson Kister, the family did not have prior friction with Richardson.

“It’s one of those things you never think about, mortality, until you realize all your siblings and your parents could be gone in a second,” he said.

“It was pretty freaky. All the neighbors were outside. It was surprising,” said Jim, who lives nearby.

Another neighbor, Doug Hume, said his thoughts are with those affected.

“I hope the families do the best they can. This is not something you prepare for,” Hume said.

Mesa police said the shooting was an isolated incident, officers did not fire their weapons, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Richardson’s fiancée tells ABC15 the family is distraught and not prepared to comment publicly. Police say the motive remains unclear as detectives continue their investigation.
