City of Chandler proposes utility rate increases for 2027

CHANDLER, AZ — Rising costs and projects, like upgrades at water treatment facilities and infrastructure replacements, are driving the city to propose rate increases for 2027.

Water rates would rise across the board for all customers by 9%. Wastewater would go up 6.5%. Reclaimed water would go up 9%, and solid waste 4.5%.

“The majority of our customers are residential, so an average residence that uses about 10,000 gallons of water is going to see about a $6 increase. $3 from water, $2 from wastewater and $1 from the solid waste increase,” said Matt Dunbar, budget and policy director for the City of Chandler.

This would be the second rate hike in less than a year. The city says even with the increase, Chandler’s rates would remain the lowest in the valley.

“Every time we go out to residents and ask for more money, we want to make sure it is needed, there is a specific purpose for it, and that we make those adjustments in a measured way that kind of makes it a little easier for them to accept throughout their normal busy lives,” said Dunbar.

These proposed increases will be discussed at a public hearing on Oct. 15. Council is expected to make a decision in November.
